Peter Schmeichel says he ‘can’t remember’ James Maddison being this good at Leicester City following his strong start in Tottenham Hotspur colours.

On Saturday, James Maddison opened his account for his new club when Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham recorded a 2-0 win over Bournemouth – Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham also shared his reaction.

Legendary goalkeeper Schmeichel thinks Maddison is being a ‘leader’ of this new-look Tottenham side and he is showcasing ‘responsibility’ by taking Harry Kane’s number ten number, as he told Premier League Productions (26/08/23 at 2:45 pm).

As Ian Wright put it, when it was suggested that Maddison was headed to Spurs, it just felt right and now he is going to be a ‘danger to a lot of teams’.

The England international, even though he suffered relegation with Leicester last season, hit double-figure goals for the club for the second season running, including earning a ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, despite not playing under Gareth Southgate for a number of years.

Well, he is already off the mark, raring to push even further and prove his worth to a set of fans that have already made him a crowd favourite.

“I think that man Maddison has been at the heart of everything, he has played really well,” said Schmeichel.

“He had number eight, that was his squad number at Tottenham, he had it for about two days, then Harry Kane left and he asked for number ten. That’s a big number. That’s big responsibility. He has been the leader. Looked like the number ten and is carrying the responsibility.

“I thought of Maddison from his Leicester days a lot. I can’t remember him being this good. I never saw him play this well.

“All the headlines will go to him because he played very, very well – this man (Ange Postecoglou), in a short space of time, has changed something at Spurs.”

Maddison’s transfer is a long time coming

There have been some who have suggested that Maddison should have been signed by Spurs three years ago, that’s after a certain Christian Eriksen left the club.

Whilst Daniel Levy wasn’t pro-active enough in making such moves, but it’s also it’s never too late.

And if truth be told, given the managers, and their type of styles, then Maddison, from an individual perspective, has arrived at the right time because Postecoglou is the perfect manager for his way of playing.
