Everton have been dealt a transfer blow as Wilfried Gnonto is now set to ‘stay’ at Leeds United.
Sky reporter James Savundra shared that Wilfried Gnonto held talks with manager Daniel Farke and chief executive, Angus Kinnear after he handed in a transfer request.
But Leeds kept firm and made it clear that they don’t want to sell the 19-year-old, even though Sean Dyche’s Everton put ‘four bids’ in for the attacker, as transfer expert
Savundra told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports (22/08/23 at 7:10 pm).Gnonto did actually start Leeds’ opening Championship game of the season, against Cardiff City, but he hasn’t featured since.
Then there was talk that he wasn’t even turning up for training, with Gabby Agbonlahor claiming that there is no way back for the player.
Well, football is a crazy game and now it seems that Gnonto is back on the first-team trail in Yorkshire.
“A big breakthrough, well Leeds will feel that it is,” said Savundra. “He is back in first-team training, so discussions have taken place with manager Daniel Farke and the chief executive Angus Kinnear and he has now re-joined the main group.
“This is quite the turnaround. Last week he handed in a transfer request and he missed the last three matches. He didn’t feel like his head was in the right place to play for the club.
“Everton have been really interested in him. They have put in four offers, the last one being £25 million, including add-ons.
“But Leeds have said throughout that he isn’t for sale. And, for now, Gnonto is set to stay.”
Blow for Everton and delight for Leeds
If Gnonto does stay at Leeds, then it’s a massive boost for the promotion hopefuls, but a body blow for Everton – he is a ‘special’ player, who will have a massive impact.
There is every chance that the duo swap leagues this season because Leeds are backing themselves to go straight back up, whilst Everton have lost their opening two matches.
The Merseyside club survived relegtion last season by the skin of their teeth, and at the expense of Leeds, but after losing their first two matches and not even scoring, then it’s understandable if fans are already fearing the worst.
