Charles Watts says it would be ‘worse’ if Folarin Balogun joins Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea over Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur from Arsenal.
The 22-year-old scored 21 goals in France’s top-tier last season, and despite those efforts, it seems as though he has no future at Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Watts claimed that Arsenal ‘will sell’ their Hale-End academy product this summer, as he told his own YouTube channel.
Whilst clubs in Italy and France have knocked on the door for Folarian Balogun, two surprise names in Tottenham and Chelsea have popped up to try and secure his signature, as reported by 90min and Gazzetta dello Sport,
Given that Balogun’s current contract expires in 2025, added to claims he wants to find regular first-team football, then the Gunners have to try and move the player on.
But could he be wearing the Tottenham or Chelsea shirt anytime soon? Well, Watts shared why it would be ‘worse’ if he went to Stamford Bridge.
“Ideally, they wouldn’t have to (sell Balogun),” said Watts. “He would have to have a long-term contract, then we would spend a little bit more time developing him.
“But because of his contract issue, because of his ambition to go and play, be a regular right now, then I think Arsenal simply have to sell. I think it’s pretty clear that they will sell. The fact that he isn’t in and around the squad, at the moment, suggests that.
“Monaco are interested and they have had a bid knocked back, so we will wait to see if they could come up with a second bid, which is more acceptable to Arsenal.
“But you look at Chelsea, the business they are doing and the money they are spending, if someone is going to come in and hit the sort of mark that Arsenal want for Balogun, then Chelsea would be one of those clubs. I would feel worse selling Balogun to Chelsea than I would to Spurs. Tottenham feel a little bit irrelevant, to me.
“That’s weird because, aside from last season, Spurs have finished above Arsenal like six seasons in a row. They have been better than Arsenal. I think Chelsea will come back. Pochettino is a good manager.”
Balogun making a brave call
There’s no doubt that if Balogun accepted a long-term contract with Arsenal, then it would please the fans and the powers that be at the club.
But he is brave in wanting to earn those regular starts, rather than sit on the bench, which in truth, he would do at the Emirates.
That’s why he has been dubbed ‘one of the most exciting players’ in Europe by one of his personal coaches.
