Gary Neville has stated that Arsenal clearly lack an instinctive goalscorer following their 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal’s lack of a natural goalscorer has ‘become apparent’ having failed to find a winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
That is the view of pundit Gary Neville, who speaking to Sky Sports (24/09, 3:55pm) during co-commentary duty.
Neville watched on as Arsenal took the lead in the North London derby with Bukayo Saka’s strike deflected in by Cristian Romero.
Tottenham equalised through Son Heung-min before Saka’s second-half penalty put Arsenal back in front again.
Spurs immediately hit back through a Son leveller and Arsenal just couldn’t find a winner, meaning they had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Gary Neville questions Arsenal attackers
Arsenal did create some half chances towards the end of the game but that killer touch was lacking.
Neville noted in the dying stages of the game that Arsenal’s problem became really apparent to him late on in the game.
Neville noticed that Arsenal really lacked an ‘instinctive’ player to go and attack balls in the box when crosses and flick-ons came around the goal.
The former Manchester United defender felt that Arsenal really lacked something up top as Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus didn’t have their best days in front of goal.
“It has become apparent in the last 10-15 minutes that when balls have gone into the box, corners have been flicked on, they just haven’t got an instinctive player,” said Neville.
Arsenal may look for another striker in 2024
Jesus especially had one unbelievable chance, robbing James Maddison of possession around the Tottenham box.
The Brazilian smashed his effort over the crossbar though, lacking the composure to put Arsenal 2-0 up.
Nketiah didn’t really offer much in terms of goalscoring threat and Neville was seemingly left frustrated with Arsenal’s lack of filler instinct.
Kai Havertz doesn’t really solve that problem if he ends up playing as a striker and Arsenal may well look to bring in a new face in 2024.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been mentioned but that won’t be cheap, leaving Mikel Arteta with plenty to think about ahead of the January transfer window.
