Glenn Hoddle was critical of Jorginho’s performance and how he was doing things ‘out of character’ during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Sunday.
Making a mistake in a derby game is bad enough, but doing it when you have just been subbed on is even worse, especially when it’s an unplanned move.
That was the case with Jorginho, who didn’t start the north London derby, but following an injury to Declan Rice, he was subbed on at half-time.
As Bukayo Saka put Arsenal back into the lead early in the second half, a minute later, Jorginho, dwelled on the ball too much inside his own half, with James Maddison pouncing on his mistake and feeding Son Heung-min for the equaliser.
Tottenham legend Glen Hoddle couldn’t understand what the 31-year-old was doing during his time on the pitch and how he was ‘out of character’, as he told Premier League Productions (24/09/23 at 7:15 pm).
Usually, the £110k-a-week Italy international (Spotrac) can be trusted to be reliable on the ball because that is one of his strengths, but not against Spurs.
Jorginho mistake
“Jorginho came on and made the mistake, actually he wasn’t at match sharpness,” said Hoddle. “He was doing things out of character. That’s not Jorginho’s game.
“Dragging back and trying to complicate the game, particularly in that area of the pitch when you are second from last on the ball – and, to fair to Maddison, he goes and presses him and bang! And they go and get the equaliser.”
Arsenal shoot themselves in the foot
Mikel Arteta and his players only have themselves to blame. They had the lead on two occasions, yet they failed to hurt their rivals.
On paper, given Tottenham’s record away from home in this fixture, it will be seen as a better result for Ange Postecoglou’s side than for their neighbours.
But, for now, Arsenal move forward in their quest to win the Premier League title because this is dropped points.
