Jujutsu Kaisen’s author Gege Akutami took inspiration from various things while constructing the storyline for the manga, and one of the most evil characters from the story takes inspiration from real-life Japanese myth.

Gege Akutami is a mastermind when it comes to his storyline and Jujutsu Kaisen is an example of how magnificent his works are. While creating the storyline, Gege made sure that he did enough research to satisfy the craving of all the manga lovers. The story managed to become an instant hit and even led to an anime adaptation. However, not many are aware that an evil character from the anime is based on real-life Japanese myths.

How Japanse muth inspired a Jujutsu Kaisen character

In the manga and anime, fans are introduced to the character of Sukuna, who is often referred to as the King of Curses. As per reports, a real-life man named Sukuna lived in the Nara period and he shared similar physical characteristics as the fictional character.

It was believed that the real-life Sukuna had superhuman strength and was able to use different weapons with ease. Some of the old documents noted that Sukuna was a rebel who did not like bowing to the Imperial seat. This led to him taking the lives of several people. He was ultimately killed by Shogun Takefurukuma no Mikoto, who was sent by the emperor.

However, some people think that there is inconsistency in the story of Sukuna. Local legends believe Sukuna was the name given to a ruling member or party and the rumors about him being ruthless were a conspiracy to turn the people against him. In reality, some thought that he was a kind person who wanted to fight for the people. This story was later connected to the 2005 incident that Gege even referenced for the construction of Sukuna’s character.

What happened in 2005?

In 2005, the practice of Sokushinbutsu became a trending topic of discussion as people spoke about the old tradition where monks would mummify themselves alive in the hope of reaching enlightenment.

Later, a post that was made on 2Channel forums went viral as it revisited the incident of two constructor workers coming across a wooden box that had a letter that stated Ryomen Sukuna was sealed in it. A priest was reportedly called to assess the box and he commanded everyone to not open the box.

The post noted that two part-time workers ended up opening the box and started feeling sick right after. They eventually died in the hospital and the priest took the box with him. Given that this incident does not have any other evidence, some are convinced that it is no more than a myth.

What chapters of manga does season 2 cover?

Part 2 of season 2 is going to cover the Shibuya Incident, that is chapters 83-152 of the manga. Meanwhile, the first five episodes covered Chapter 65.
