Gun security firm Liberty Safe is facing backlash from conservatives online after the business confirmed that it had cooperated with the FBI during an investigation into a case many believe to be linked to the infamous January 6 Capitol insurrection.

While the authorities continue to press on with their investigations into the January 6 Capitol riots of 2021, firearm security company Liberty Safe is the latest brand to be hit by collateral damage from the Washington protests, with several patrons of the business unhappy after the firm confirmed it had recently provided the FBI with customer intel.

Liberty Safe admits FBI cooperation over January 6 riots

Some two and a half years on from the notorious January 6 riots which saw thousands of protestors storm the US Capitol Building, resulting in numerous injuries and multiple deaths, the nation’s authorities are finally beginning to clamp down on those believed to be responsible – from former president Donald Trump down to the people on the ground.

And firearm protection giants Liberty Safe have been dragged into the Jan 6 debacle after they confirmed today, September 6, that they had provided the FBI with a customer’s security details on August 30, after the organization approached them during a recent investigation. Though the exact specifics of the case they assisted with are unknown, the details given in the company’s statement match those of a story published online this week, in which a prominent conservative account claimed that Liberty Safe had assisted the FBI with arresting someone believed to be connected to the January 6 riots.

At the time of writing it is unclear if the case that Liberty Safe assisted the FBI with was linked to the January 6 riots, though HITC has reached out to the company for comment.

Liberty Safe’s statement prompts angry boycott calls

While Liberty Safe’s statement neither confirmed nor denied that the business had assisted with the arrest of someone who is believed to have attended the January 6 riots, swathes of conservative Twitter users appear to believe that this is the case – and it’s safe to say they are less than happy with the way the security company handled itself.

“If Liberty Safe had even 1 brain cell of common sense remaining in their entire company, they would profusely apologize for giving the Feds the passcode to their customer’s safe,” wrote one prominent conservative voice online. “But they won’t” he continued, “(Because) they’re FedSafe not LibertySafe”.

“Your guns are not safe in a Liberty Safe. Return them immediately” added another. “Cancel any orders. They will give your passcode to the feds.”

Why are people comparing Liberty Safe to Bud Light?

Liberty Safe’s decision to assist the FBI with its investigation has been perceived by many as a breach of trust. Though Liberty Safe stressed that it is “devoted” to the protection of customers’ privacy, the company did note that its protocol dictates that it will assist with investigations should there be a valid search warrant in place – which in this instance, there was.

The crux of the backlash, however, essentially derives from the fact that many conservatives clearly believe that a search warrant does not justify handing over customers’ data to the authorities.

Those who are comparing Liberty Safe to Bud Light are doing so as they believe Bud Light also sold out its customer base when it collaborated with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney back in April this year – a move that was wildly unpopular with many of its customers who appeared to be uncomfortable with the promotion of a queer person.

So when political commentator Collin Rugg writes “We have officially found the Bud Light of gun safes”, he is essentially saying that Liberty Safe is the next business on an ever-growing list of companies that conservatives should steer clear of, as he believes their values do not align with he and various other like-minded people’s moral code.
