Ian Wright gave Kai Havertz his flowers following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The big-money Arsenal signing has been a huge talking point ever since he swapped Chelsea’s colours for those at the Emirates.
From the get-go, fans, pundits and the media alike were giving Kai Havertz verbal pelters by claiming that he simply wasn’t good enough for Mikel Arteta’s side – some were calling him a ‘flop’ before he could even kick a ball.
But against his former club yesterday, he proved his worth by making a difference from the bench, with Ian Wright adding ‘he had a presence’, as he told Premier League Productions (21/10/23 at 7:25 pm).
It doesn’t change everything, but it’s easy to critique someone and do it at a high volume, so he deserves that same energy now that he has done something positive.
Ian Wright was sure to praise the German international and how his former club just simply ‘couldn’t afford to lose that game’.
Kai Havertz praise
“Kai Havertz came on,” said Wright. “He had a presence and won us the ball there. And we got something out of that.
“In the main, you have to take something out of that simply because you can’t afford to lose that game.”
Arsenal going strong
Unbeaten after nine Premier League games. Wins against both Manchester clubs. And points against your London rivals.
You would have taken such a start if you were an Arsenal fan at the start of the season, but it’s Manchester City who are sitting top of the tree.
Perhaps it’s not a bad thing for Arsenal because it takes a bit of the limelight away from them and it’s something they need.
There is already huge pressure on the team this season and it’s only going to increase once those crunch moments of the season arrive.
