Peter Schmeichel says he has been ‘very, very impressed’ by James Maddison following Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Luton Town.

The legendary goalkeeper admitted that when James Maddison was at Leicester City, he saw ‘high level’ football from the playmaker, but ‘not the highest level’.

But now that he is at Tottenham under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou, he is seeing a different player emerge, as he told Premier League Productions (07/04/23 at 2:40 pm).

Despite being down to ten men yesterday, it was the club’s summer signing who produced the magic that helped Spurs open the scoring.

Micky van de Ven was the recipient of that, whilst James Maddison provided his fifth assist in eight games for the club.

That puts Ange Postecoglou’s side top of the tree, with James Maddison proving to be one of the signings of the summer so far.

James Maddison assists for Spurs again

“Very, very impressive,” said Schmeichel. “Brilliant again from Maddison. We followed Leicester for a long, long time with Maddison in the team.

“When he first broke into that team, he promised so much, then all of a sudden, it was a high-level, but not the highest level. He wasn’t producing what he is producing now.

“It seems like he has a manager who knows how to manage him, tell him precisely what his responsibilities are and use everything you are good at, then you will see the results.

“And, my God, the impact he has had on this Tottenham team.”

England’s main man?

The international fixtures have arrived again and it will be interesting to see how Gareth Southgate views Maddison.

This time last season, he wasn’t even part of the England set-up after being out of the cold for a number of years.

But there came a point where Southgate couldn’t ignore his goals and he earned his ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And now it could be argued that he is a certain starter in the middle of the park alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
