Gary Neville told the Arsenal players at one stage of today’s game against Manchester City not to pass the ball to David Raya.
A lot has been made of the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal this season, with Mikel Arteta deciding to drop his previous number one, Aaron Ramsdale.
But during the early stages against Manchester City, whilst on commentary duty, Gary Neville felt that David Raya was a ‘nervous wreck’, as he told Sky Sports Premier League (08/10/23).
One of the main reasons why pundits felt that Mikel Arteta opted to push for his summer loan signing as his number one was because of his passing ability.
But it was that very quality that nearly landed him in trouble, with Julian Alvarez closing him down like a Kyote and nearly putting the ball into the back of the net.
It didn’t impress Gary Neville, who felt that, at one stage, his own teammates should stop giving him the ball.
David Raya’s passing
“I can spot a keeper off that’s a nervous wreck and there is one right in front of you,” said Neville. “That mistake in midweek. He is carrying it into this game. He hasn’t got a picture at all.
“He’s not sharp enough and he’s very lucky. He is telling the crowd to get going Mikel Arteta, but I am not sure what that is going to do to David Raya.
“He is just struggling a bit with the goalkeeper – don’t pass back.”
Clean sheet secured
Yes, there were nerves from Raya today, but it’s all about how you react and he came out fighting in the second half.
There was a lot of calmness to his game during that second period, as Arsenal’s backline shut off Man City to secure that clean sheet.
And then Gabriel Martinelli scored the all-important goal to help the Gunners showcase their intent to win the Premier League title this season.
