Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted that defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is incredibly popular in the dressing room.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has been hailed as a ‘fantastic player’ by boss Mikel Arteta after scoring for Arsenal against Sheffield United.

The Gunners were unsurprisingly dominant against a Sheffield United side rooted to the bottom of the table.

Eddie Nketiah grabbed the headlines with a fine hat-trick before Fabio Vieira and Tomiyasu added late goals.

Tomiyasu’s goal was the icing on the cake for Arsenal as they racked up a comfortable 5-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

The Japanese defender is starting to really gather momentum.

Tomiyasu made an impact off the bench against Manchester City and then impressed against Chelsea last weekend.

Tomiyasu started again Sevilla in midweek but was back on the bench against Sheffield United.

Arteta decided to throw Tomiyasu on just after the hour mark, sending him on in place of Ben White.

Tomiyasu managed to get himself on the scoresheet, his first goal in an Arsenal shirt.

Arteta then moved to praise Tomiyasu, telling the club’s official website that he absolutely loves the defender.

The Spaniard noted that Tomiyasu is so popular inside the Arsenal dressing room and is a ‘fantastic player’.

“I love him. Everybody loves him,” said Arteta. “He’s one of the most popular in the dressing room. You can see the reaction of his team-mates towards him. They wanted him there at the front, enjoying it. He’s always very reserved and always doing things for the rest of the boys. He’s a fantastic player for the team,” he added.

My view: Tomiyasu versatility so important to Arsenal

Edu pounced to sign Tomiyasu back in 2021 as the Japan international made a £16million move from Bologna.

Tomiyasu was superb in his first season but started just six Premier League games last season in a rather frustrating campaign.

Tomiyasu is now taking his chance in the Arsenal side and Arteta must absolutely love the versatility he provides.

In the last few days, we have seen Tomiyasu play at left back and then at right back, whilst he can also play as a centre back if needed.

Tomiyasu may not start regularly but he will give his all in a number of positions – and those players are so important to successful teams.
