Jacob Wetterling’s mother recently opened up about her son’s disappearance and murder and admitted that she wrote letters for her missing son every day in the hope he would return one day.
ABC‘s 20/20 will be documenting an investigative two-hour special about the disappearance of Jacob Wetterling. Jacob was only 11 years old when he was kidnapped and his case was solved 27 years later. Patty Wetterling, Jacob’s mother, is all set to release her book Dear Jacob: A Mother’s Journey of Hope, documenting the tragic event that took place in 1989.
What we know about Jacob Wetterling’s case
As per reports, Jacob was only 11 years old when he was abducted when he was bicycling from home after a visit to the convenience store. Within hours, police had taken up the case and were on a mission to trace Jacob. However, days passed and they got no lead.
Weeks passed and police suspected the worst. However, during this period, several sketches of the alleged attacker were released after the police got hold of footage from the convenience store. It wasn’t until months later that the police were able to put the pieces together as another victim stepped forward and revealed the sketch of their assaulter. The sketch led them to Danny Heinrich, who was investigated by the FBI.
Police continued to compare the evidence they had. Danny was eventually arrested but was released soon after with no charges. He was again arrested years later, in 2015, after police were able to find evidence related to Jacob’s murder at his home. A year later, in 2016, Danny confessed to the murder and led police to the remains of Jacob.

Jacob Wetterling’s mother opens up about the death of her son
Ahead of the ABC special, Jacob’s mother, Patty, opened up about her son’s death and admitted she wrote countless letters for her son in the hope of telling him everything once he returned home.
She said: “If he came home tomorrow, I wanted him to know exactly what we had tried, everything that we’d tried, ’cause I kept thinking he was wondering why did it take so long?” In one of the letters, she wrote: “Dear Jacob, my heart hurts as days pass by without you. I wrestle over the details again and again. Who could have done this? Where are you, Jacob? I love you Jacob and I promise, I will never stop searching for you. Love Mom.”
After Jacob’s case was solved, Patty took it upon herself to make sure no other parent had to experience the grief she went through. Her husband, Jerry Wetterling, said: “Jacob spurred Patty into being a bulldog, you know, for keeping kids safe.”
