Season 3 of Lupin introduces some key characters from Assane Diop’s past in the form of Bruno and Jean-Luc Keller but who exactly are they?

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Lupin season 3* — After more than two years away from our screens, Lupin has finally returned to Netflix for its long-awaited third installment, bringing with it the introductions of several key characters from Assane Diop’s troubled past.

Who is Bruno in Lupin?

We first meet Bruno in the opening episode of Lupin season 3, but not everything is as it seems with the new character, played by Pierre Lottin, who initially appears to be an officer in Paris’s BRI police unit.

It later transpires that he’s been working with Assane to help plan and carry out the heist to steal the priceless Black Pearl.

As the season progresses, however, it’s revealed that Assane and Bruno have known each other for more than two decades as they used to be neighbors and friends when they were growing up – with childhood Bruno being played by Noé Wodecki.

To help pass the time in their youth, Bruno took Assane to a boxing gym run by a coach named Keller where things began to take a turn for the worse.

Who is Keller in Lupin?

Jean-Luc Keller, played in the flashbacks by Salif Cissé and Steve Tientcheu in the present day, initially appeared to be nothing more than an incredibly passionate boxing coach.

However, the more Assane and Bruno spent time at the gym, the more Keller’s true nature became clear as he used the boxing club as a façade through which he could manipulate and recruit children into becoming thieves working for his criminal organization.

Assane and Bruno fell victim to Keller’s schemes and were reluctantly forced to carry out a heist during the summer of 1998 while the rest of the country was distracted by the ongoing football World Cup finals that were held in France.

The flashback arc comes to a head after the heist when Keller, Assane and Bruno end up in a car chase that proves pivotal in all three of their lives. Keller orders Bruno to shoot and kill a pursuing police officer who is following on a motorbike.

He does so but a distracted Keller crashes their car and flips it onto its roof. Assane and Bruno manage to slip away from the scene of the crash while Assane places the gun in Keller’s hand, resulting in him being sent to jail for 25 years.

Season 3’s sinister plot

After Assane and his crew pull off the opening heist of season 3, things take a dark turn when Diop receives word from his previously estranged mother, Mariama, that she is in Paris and has been kidnapped by a shady criminal organization.

The criminal cabal subsequently blackmails Assane into working for them by threatening to kill his mother, while they also force him to give up the priceless Black Pearl to them as well.

Despite being in the most desperate of circumstances, Assane doesn’t panic and instead puts a plan in place to work out who’s behind the blackmail, save his mother, and get the pearl back.

It’s eventually revealed that the shady organization is run by none other than Jean-Luc Keller himself who has spent the last 25 years in jail and plotting how to revenge against Assane Diop.
