Crystal Palace reportedly want River Plate striker Pablo Solari with the Premier League outfit planning to test the waters with an opening bid of £12 million.

With Christmas approaching and the January window following in it’s wake, transfer season is on its way. Reports linking Crystal Palace with one of the most exciting striking talents in South America the football equivalent of the first spin of ‘All I Want For Christmas’ from your local radio station.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson could be forgiven for taking a leaf out of Mariah Carey’s book (not a sentence we expected to be writing), calling up Steve Parish and serenading the Eagles chairman with a chorus of ‘All I Want For January Is A New Centre-Forward’.

Crystal Palace like Pablo Solari

After a bright start, the goals have dried up for Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Crystal Palace are averaging only a goal-a-game so far. The returns from injury of Michael Olise and Ebere Eze should, at least, light a fire under an often underwhelming attack.

A striker of Pablo Solari’s potential would be welcomed with open arms too. The Argentine has 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for River Plate in 2023. Those numbers painting the picture of a well-rounded, unselfish number nine. One capable of creating chances as well as finishing them off.

Reporter Miguel Hoffman, speaking to Radio Continental, claims that Crystal Palace are preparing an opening offer of £12 million. River Plate are, however, holding out for £20 million (El Futbolero).

A £12 million bid on the way?

An inventive and often emphatic finisher, Solari scores all types of goals. Gorgeous chips and stunning bicycle kicks included. The man who replaced Manchester City’s World Cup winner Julian Alvarez at River Plate also loves to drop deep and drift wide, leaving defenders for dead with a trademark body swerve and a burst of acceleration.

“Marcelo sees, in Solari, a kid who is going to provide many solutions for the team,” a confidante of former River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo told Infobae in 2022.

“Pablo has another very important thing. He plays freely, as if his shirt doesn’t weigh him down. And that doesn’t always happen at a club like River, where many players need time to adapt.”

Palace’s January plans could be complicated, however, by Manchester United’s interest in their ‘brilliant’ director of football Dougie Freedman.
