Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is now making Newcastle United his preferred option for a January move.

Tottenham Hotspur could miss out on Kalvin Phillips as he fancies a move to Newcastle United in 2024.

That is according to 90min, who claim that Newcastle are becoming the ‘preferred option’ for Phillips in January.

Phillips hasn’t even started a single Premier League game this season and has played just 89 minutes across four substitute appearances.

The 27-year-old needs to be playing ahead of Euro 2024 and a departure from the Etihad Stadium looks very likely.

Kalvin Phillips fancies Newcastle United move

There will be no shortage of suitors for Phillips, who previously showed his quality in the Premier League with Leeds United.

That is ultimately why City paid £45million to sign Phillips in 2022.

It hasn’t worked out though and Phillips could now move on with Newcastle United a potential destination.

The Magpies have lost Sandro Tonali to a suspension and are now in the market for another midfielder.

90min claim that a loan deal for Phillips is being considered – and that the Magpies are emerging as the preferred move for Phillips.

Phillips may well believe that he can play regularly at Newcastle and get his career back on track under Eddie Howe after barely featuring under Pep Guardiola.

Johan Lange could miss out on bringing Phillips to Tottenham

This will be a blow to Tottenham and particularly their new technical director Johan Lange.

The Telegraph claimed in October that Lange is a big fan of Phillips and would like to bring him to Tottenham.

Lange only recently moved over from Aston Villa but may experience a first real transfer disappointment at Spurs.

Newcastle can at least offer guaranteed minutes until the end of the season whereas Phillips may risk being second-choice to Yves Bissouma in the Spurs midfield.

Playing time has to be the full focus for Phillips head into January and Tonali’s suspension may just give Newcastle the upper hand.
