Tim Sherwood thinks one of the big differences between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa on Sunday was the quality of their benches.
Both Tottenham and Aston Villa have had their injury issues this season – Ange Postecoglou is facing his problems now.
From the very first game of the season, Villa have been without four first-team stars in Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, Alex Moreno and Emi Buendia – two have since returned to the squad, with the rising English star coming off the bench yesterday.
But whilst Villa had a loaded bench, including Youri Tielemans, who assisted Ollie Watkins for the winner, and super sub Leon Bailey.
It was a different story for Spurs and Tim Sherwood added that the London club ‘never had the changes to make’, as he told Premier League Productions (26/11/23 at 7:20 pm).
The likes of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, who was criticised for his part in Villa’s goal, Oliver Skipp and 20-year-old Alejo Véliz were used by Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham and Villa’s squad depth
“The game was one with the strongest squad,” said Sherwood. “They (Villa) were allowed to make changes off the bench.
“Tottenham never had. They never had the changes to make. They have had so many injuries and so many suspensions, it has been crippling them. They have got Man City up next and they need to stop the rot, at the moment.”
Villa punish Tottenham
Spurs should have been out of sight in the first half, but they left the door open and Villa well and truly punished them.
From the quality Emery could use from the bench and the tactical changes he made, they ate Spurs up in the second half.
In the end, it was a deserved three points for the Midlands side, with the club’s official Twitter account mocking Tottenham after the match.
