Former Arsenal and Premier League star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored only one Ligue 1 goal this season though Marseille president Pablo Longoria is not giving up on the veteran just yet.

Arsenal, it seems, got out at the right time.

As the Gunners go from strength-to-strength under Mikel Arteta, the striker who captained Arsenal at the start of the Spaniard’s tenure is doing little over in France to dispel the notion that his powers are on the wane.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has only one goal from 11 Ligue 1 appearances. In fact, if you go back to the start of 2022/23 – only a couple of months after Arsenal tore up his contract – the Gabon international has found the net only once in 25 league matches for Chelsea and Marseille respectively.

Another nightmare season for former Arsenal captain

L’OM have made some strange decisions in recent seasons. But handing a 34-year-old and clearly declining Aubameyang a three-year deal surely ranks among the strangest of the lot, even if Longoria is convinced that there is still a prolific centre-forward in there somewhere.

“When I see him training every day, I have no doubt (that he can find form again) Aubameyang is an international-level player,” Longoria tells RMC Sport.

“Could he improve his offensive efficiency? Yes. He has to criticise himself as well, and live in reality. Will that happen? Yes. I’m sure of it, particularly because I see how he works everyday.

“I believe that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the same Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the one that we saw at Barcelona.

“I am sure he will emerge.”

What were Marseille thinking?

Aubameyang has, at least, found goals easier to come by in Europe. Combine his Ligue 1 and his continental tallies together, and you get five in 13 appearances. Hardly prolific – at least compared to those heady days at Arsenal, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund – but hardly the return of a man bound for the scrapheap either.

But, still, the odd Thursday night effort against Panathinaikos is not what Marseille had in mind when signing off on a deal which could keep Aubameyang in France until 2026.
