Alongside the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony is hard at work expanding its Spider-Man Universe which currently comprises the films Venom, its sequel Let There Be Carnage, Morbius and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Now, fans have been given their first glimpse of a new movie in the ‘SSU’ in the form of Madame Web.
Madame Web trailer recap
The first trailer for Madame Web dropped on Wednesday, November 15 and introduces fans to Dakota Johnson’s character, Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Webb, a New York paramedic who begins to experience mysterious visions of the future.
Madame Web’s trailer opens with a diner scene that ends in a brutal confrontation with a Spider-Man-esque figure, only for Cassie to relive the same scene moments as her clairvoyant abilities are showcased for the first time.
As the trailer continues, we see Cassie crossing paths with a trio of teenagers who all have an enigmatic connection to her and each other and it’s revealed that Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazon are all Spider-Powered individuals.
Besides the film’s protagonists, the trailer also shows off Ezekiel Sims, the villainous Spider-Man-like character who pursues Cassie and her web of companions.
Ezekiel Sims’ origins and powers explained
In the Marvel comics, Ezekiel Sims was a human character who gained his powers after going through a mystical ritual that gave him the abilities of a so-called Spider-Totem – a supernatural entity that bestows its powers upon an avatar, similar in a sense to Moon Knight.
As the Madame Web trailer shows, Ezekiel explored the Amazon rainforest with Cassie’s mother while she was studying spiders, so perhaps the film will have him discover the mysterious Spider-Totem while deep in the jungle.
Ezekiel’s powers are almost identical to those of Spider-Man, giving him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility and reflexes while he also possesses the ability to wallcrawl and use Spider-Sense.
However, while Peter Parker uses his great power to do good, Ezekiel Sims sees an opportunity to improve his own situation and uses his abilities to attain incredible wealth.
Despite appearing to be a full-blooded villain in Madame Web, Ezekiel’s character in the comics strayed into some morally gray areas although eventually attempted to redeem himself by helping to save Peter Parker from the Gatekeeper, another of the mystical Great Totems from where Ezekiel got his powers.
Marvel fans react to the villain
While the Madame Web trailer has earned a mixed response since its release, the appearance of Ezekiel Sims has proven popular with Marvel comics fans.
One fan on YouTube commented: “Ezekiel looks sick 🔥”
While another wrote: “Yo why they make my boy Ezekiel the villain. Although having evil Spider-Man as the bad guy, oooh this is gonna be some heat!”
“Bro they got Ezekiel in here???” said a third. “Do I wish Peter was more involved like the comics? Yes. But do one of my absolute favorite Spider-Man characters finally see some love? YES. Super excited to see how they portray all of this, especially since he’s tied to the Spider-Totem rather a science-born spider.”
“The costumes look quite cool,” commented this fan. “I don’t remember Ezekiel having a suit in the comics but I don’t mind them giving him one since his design in the comics is basically a guy who doesn’t wear shoes, evil Spider-Man is more fun appearance-wise at least.
Another fan said: “Can’t wait to see this interpretation of Ezekiel Sims.”
And finally, this YouTube commenter wrote: “Ezekiel and Julia actually look surprisingly great, the suits are a lot better than I thought they’d be.”
