Adidas labeled NBA player Kevin Durant “dusty” in a hilarious deleted tweet, before claiming it was meant for a burner account instead.

The tweet has of course not gone unnoticed and has since been shared by NBA fans across X, formally known as Twitter.

“U dusty bouta retire soon anyway,” the official Adidas account tweeted today, giving its two cents into a lighthearted sportsman beef between Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards.

The story behind Adidas’ tweet to Kevin Durant

Adidas’ shots fired at Durant didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. Earlier this week, NBA player Anthony Edwards was filmed saying that of all players, he’d like Durant to try out his Adidas sneakers. Durant signed a lifetime deal with rival sports brand Nike earlier this year.

After seeing the circulating video, Durant took to X to give his answer. “Won’t ever see me put a big toe in them MFers,” he wrote.

Adidas wasn’t going to take the insult lying down though and took to Durant’s replies, albeit only briefly. “U dusty bouta retire soon anyway,” wrote the brand. The tweet has since been deleted but the evidence is still there.

Shortly after, the Adidas account again replied to the tweet, instead writing: “Meant to send that from the burner account…”

Twitter has been alight with reactions to the tweet

Sports fans have been entertained by the company-athlete banter and many have been sharing proof of it across social media. Some have even been taking aim at Adidas, claiming that the brand should have stood its ground, instead of deleting the tweet to Durant.

“Bring the tweet back,” wrote one user. “Stand on binness. Take care of your responsibilities.”

“Wait. Why did you delete the tweet? It will live on in screenshots,” added another X user.

Another noted: “Adidas deleting that tweet has me wheezing.”

“This is a social media genius,” tweeted one Adidas fan, in response to users claiming whoever’s behind the tweet might be in trouble.

The eye of this whole storm was Anthony Edwards’ Adidas sneaker. His first signature sneaker, the AE1, will be released on December 16th.

Durant might not be eager to try even a big toe in them, but fans certainly are. The shoes are available directly from Adidas both online and in-store and will cost $120.

The shoes are dedicated to Edwards’ mother and grandmother with the cream-orange colorway, as they are their favorite colors. This colorway is titled “With Love.”
