Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Eric Dier is now ‘seriously considering’ an emotional return to Sporting Lisbon as he targets a transfer abroad ahead of being a free agent.
That is according to talkSPORT, which reports that Dier is giving real thought to returning to Sporting Lisbon. He left the Portuguese giants to join Tottenham in August 2014 but is close to the end of his time in north London. The 29-year-old will be out of contract next summer.
Tottenham explored offloading Dier to another Premier League club during the summer. But he did not find any of the options on the table at the time enticing enough to quit Spurs. So, Dier held out and can begin to negotiate a free transfer with foreign teams in the New Year.

A move abroad appeals far more to Dier than staying in the Premier League once his time at Tottenham expires. He grew up in Portugal and joined Sporting Lisbon’s academy at a young age. Spurs then swooped in 2014 for a £4m transfer after 32 first-team games for the Leoes.
Dier proved to be a key presence in the Tottenham senior side from his first season in north London. He has since amassed 363 appearances across all competitions but has been left to take a reserve role this term. Ange Postecoglou has only used the defender in two games.

Postecoglou also only turned to Dier for his campaign debut after Cristian Romero’s red card against Chelsea. The 49-cap England enforcer then kept his place against Wolves. But Dier fell straight back to Tottenham’s bench against Aston Villa following the international break.
Now, Dier is giving serious consideration to an emotional move back to Sporting Lisbon with his free transfer from Tottenham on the cards. Postecoglou continually overlooking a player Graham Roberts once dubbed ‘superb’ will have fuelled Dier’s desire to explore any options.
