Martin Keown says VAR John Brooks and referee Anthony Taylor controversially ruling Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey’s goal against Sheffield United out raised a ‘grey area’.

The two teams played out a 1-1 draw in Birmingham this Friday night as Aston Villa wasted a chance to top the Premier League table. But Bailey thought he had given Unai Emery’s team the lead before Cameron Archer (87’) would put the Blades ahead on his return to Villa Park.

Bailey put the ball in the back of Wes Foderingham’s net in the 59th minute. The 26-year-old lifted his strike into the top corner after Ollie Watkins won the ball back and cut a cross over to his unmarked teammate. But VAR Brooks rewound the replays before ruling the goal out.

Why was Leon Bailey’s goal ruled out in Aston Villa vs Sheffield United?

VAR Brooks told on-field referee Taylor that Bailey’s strike should not stand as Jacob Ramsey fouled Foderingham in the build-up. The Aston Villa midfielder grabbed the Sheffield United goalkeeper’s arm while he tried to punch a corner clear, stopping him from meeting the ball.

Ramsey made no attempts to play the ball as he grabbed Foderingham under the shadow of the crossbar. Anis Ben Slimane and Gustavo Hamer both then made a hash of trying to clear the ball. Watkins also mugged George Baldock for the ball before sending a cross into Bailey.

Taylor gave Ramsey’s foul on Foderingham after reviewing Bailey’s goal on the advice of VAR Brooks to keep Aston Villa and Sheffield United level. But the Villans could not disagree that Ramsey fouled Foderingham. He knew what he was doing as he held the shot-stopper back.

However, Keown still saw a ‘grey area’ with the decision as Sheffield United had their chance to clear the ball. Multiple Blades men failed to remove the danger before Baldock dallied on the edge of the box. Sheffield United should have prevented Bailey’s controversial non-goal.

“His arm is definitely being held,” Keown told talkSPORT. “There’s definitely a foul on him, so it has to come back. I think we get to the right decision in the end.

“Foderingham was going berserk, he clearly felt he was being held. But the grey area for me was [that the] Sheffield United players had a couple of attempts to get rid of the ball [yet] they didn’t take it.”
