» » » 'I would never': Ian Wright reacts to £47m Manchester United star's actions ahead of Liverpool game

Manchester United are, for the umpteenth time, going through another turbulent period with yet another under-fire manager.

The 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Saturday was just another tale in Manchester United’s sorry story, but Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could make it much, much worse.

Liverpool will host their old rivals at Anfield on Sunday, with the opposition dreading the worst because the scoreline during the past two seasons have read – 7-0 and 4-0.

Whatever happens, Erik ten Hag will have to do without his captain Bruno Fernandes, who was booked for the fifth time this season during the humiliation against Bournemouth and is now suspended.

Michael Owen suggested that the Portugal international probably ‘didn’t fancy’ the Liverpool fixture, with Ian Wright weighing in on those comments whilst speaking to Premier League Productions (11/12/23 at 2:15 pm).

Whilst Ian Wright stated that he would ‘never accuse a professional of that’, he did highlight that the £47 million signing was the one who received the most criticism during that 7-0 defeat last season.

Bruno Fernandes suspended for the Liverpool game

“You can see this every game with Bruno Fernandes,” said Wright. “What you can see is a very good player who is so frustrated.

“I can’t (criticise) someone for dissent because it was my whole game – I had leaders around me, but he is the leader. He is somebody who is looking around for help.

On Michael Owen’s comments that Fernandes didn’t fancy the Anfield fixture: “What he knew Liverpool were coming,” added Wright.

“You can look at his actions and point the finger like ‘maybe he doesn’t want to play in the Liverpool game’. I would never accuse a professional of that. But you can look back at the 7-0 game and he was the one who came up with the most criticism.”

Liverpool v Manchester United

Every time Manchester United lose a game, there always seems to be talk that the manager could be on his last legs.

Well, if Liverpool do what many are expecting them to do at the weekend, and in style, then that talk will only get louder.

Both teams have European fixtures to deal with in between. The Reds have already done their bit in the Europa League, so expect Klopp to play a weakened side against Union Saint Gilloise.

But it’s a different task altogether for Manchester United because it’s a home tie against Bayern Munich and the risk of missing out on Europe post-Christmas.
