VAR is taking many of the headlines this season, and not for the right reasons.

You can add another file to the VAR cabinet, this time including Liverpool’s 2-1 win at ten-man Crystal Palace and Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Ian Wright was just fed up with the inconsistency in both games, with his annoyance that Arsenal and Gabriel Jesus weren’t awarded a penalty in the second half.

Yet Liverpool were punished after Jarell Quansah’s challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta, which he didn’t think was too dissimilar.

The Liverpool centre-back was punished for kicking the Crystal Palace star’s foot, which after VAR invention, conceded a penalty and the goal was scored – Jurgen Klopp’s side mounted a comeback to win the game, with Michael Owen sharing his thoughts on Alisson Becker.

But Ian Wright felt there was ’no difference’ in what happened at Selhurst Park to what happened with Gabriel Jesus and Douglas Luiz at Villa Park, as he told Match of the Day.

The Arsenal legend was pretty clear that Mikel Arteta’s side should have been awarded a penalty and added by saying ‘no point in even arguing it’.

Arsenal and Liverpool penalty calls

“You see this one, with Mateta,” said Wright. “I think that’s minimum contact as well, for me.

“He has already touched it (Quansah). Exactly (no difference to Jesus’ penalty shout against Aston Villa) because they haven’t got a clue what they are doing, in respect of the law.

“So, that one is a penalty and that one isn’t. No point in even arguing it.”

Penalty calls are subjective

On both occasions, it needs to be made clear that calls, such as this, are subjective, and always will be.

On one hand, one referee might give that very same foul a penalty, but another might feel against doing so – that penalty shout wasn’t the only thing Ian Wright was raging about.

That’s just the subjective nature of football, and fans must accept such calls. You can bring clear and obvious into play because that isn’t and doesn’t get used in the manner in which it does.
