Liverpool now appear to be having doubts about signing Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly just as Tottenham Hotspur take a very similar stance.

We are expecting to see both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur make moves for new defenders in 2024.

The Reds have lost Joel Matip to injury and may need additional depth at the back, especially with the Cameroonian expected to move on next summer.

As for Tottenham, their lack of defensive depth was exposed by the absences of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven earlier this season.

The two clubs may well target the same players – but we now appear to have an instance of them both backing away from one player…

Liverpool join Tottenham in cooling Lloyd Kelly interest

Reports in September suggested that Liverpool had joined the race to sign Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

The Cherries ace is out of contract at the end of the season and could be a cut-price option in the January window.

However, the Daily Mail now claim that Liverpool may not move for Kelly after all.

It’s suggested that Liverpool are now unsure whether Kelly is of the required quality for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Kelly has fared well for Bournemouth this season but the step up to Liverpool is a big one.

Kelly would offer depth and a natural left-footed option at centre back but whether he could become a starter at Liverpool is unclear.

The Reds likely want a player who can immediately challenge to partner Virgil van Dijk and Kelly may not be that player.

That leaves Kelly in limbo heading into January after Tottenham Hotspur also appeared to back away from signing him.

Reports in November indicated that Tottenham were likely to abandon a move for Kelly because of his injury problems.

Kelly is out of action right now and Tottenham are wary of signing him unless he can prove his fitness.

A homegrown, left-footed centre back who has been hailed as ‘very good’ by boss Andoni Iraola, Kelly is bound to have interest – but both Liverpool and Spurs may now look in another direction.
