Paul Scholes has shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s unpredictable forward, Darwin Nunez.

The 24-year-old is a player who divides opinion. Some think he is outrageously good, but just lacks that finishing touch.

Whilst others think Liverpool have wasted a lot of money in signing Darwin Nunez for a club-record £85 million because he simply won’t deliver the numbers required to win trophies.

Paul Scholes is sat in between because, whilst he likes what he sees from Darwin Nunez, he thinks there is a ‘big gap’ when it comes to the quality of his finishing.

The Manchester United legend doesn’t think the Liverpool star has the technique, nor composure to finish like a top-class striker and he doesn’t think that will ever improve, as he told Premier League Productions (17/12/23 at 7:10 pm).

The Reds were held to a disappointing goalless draw at home to Manchester United on Sunday, with Darwin Nunez starting the match.

Despite a lot of noise that Jurgen Klopp’s men were going to win, they really struggled in front of goal, with their unpredictable forward at the heart of it all.

Darwin Nunez’s finishing

“I think the biggest gap in his game is his quality of finishing,” said Scholes. “Can you see that improving at this stage?

“I think sometimes it’s on instinct a lot, isn’t it?! This lad, I am not sure what he is going to do. I don’t think he really knows what the right finish is. On the other hand, he has the energy. And, for Liverpool, they like that. They love centre-forwards who run about.

“But, ultimately, being a centre-forward you have got to score goals and he gets into some great positions. You never fancy him to score. I don’t think his technique, finishing-wise, is good enough.

“I think, as a centre-forward, finishing is all about having that clear head at the right time. The best have it. I am not sure this lad has it. He is emotional. He often makes the wrong choice. But Liverpool fans like him. People will like what he does to the team.

“But lacking that bit of composure, that bit of when you go clean through and you have a clear chance, all of a sudden, your mind becomes clear. You know what you are going to do. Michael (Owen) could do that. The best centre-forwards could. You are just not sure that is ever going to be in his game.”

Darwin Nunez will improve

When you join one of the biggest clubs in England and for a very large transfer fee, then it’s going to come with extra added pressure.

That’s the case with Nunez and he simply needs to ride the wave.

It needs to be noted that his numbers aren’t as bad as some of his finishes. He has seven goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.

And during the last campaign, the Uruguay star scored 15 and assisted four.

Yes, he needs to improve, but he is at the right club, under the right coach and he has the perfect people around him, such as Mohamed Salah
