Chelsea would be making a huge mistake if they decided to cash in on English midfielder Conor Gallagher in January or in the summer transfer window.
Under Mauricio Pochettino this season, Conor Gallagher has become a crucial cog in the Chelsea machine with the Englishman racking up 20 appearances in the league this campaign, with four assists.
However, HITC Football has reported that the West London club would be open to the sale of the midfielder due to the impact his sale would have on the clubs books and their compliance with Financial Fair Play.
Selling him would be a disaster but allowing him to move to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur would be catastrophic.
The case to keep Gallagher
Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are both two supremely talented midfielders but the numbers do not lie, Gallagher has been just as, if not more, important than the pair have been this campaign.
He is an energetic, determined and defensively brilliant midfielder for the Blues and it is his pressing from the front that helps Chelsea so much.
Selling him for a £50 million fee, which Chelsea are understood to be demanding for the Englishman, would simply be the wrong move, especially allowing the midfielder to move to North London would not be a good idea.
Similar to Mason Mount, the attacking midfielder was ridiculed for not being good enough and not providing enough but the reality is players like Gallagher in the engine room are needed to allow Fernandez to succeed.
Gallagher, according to FBREF, ranks in the top 20 percentiles for blocks, interceptions, tackles, touches and progressive passes received.
He is the facilitator to allow the better-attacking players to flourish. There is another key reason why selling Gallagher would not be the wisest move.
Going against Pochettino
HITC Football also reported that Pochettino, and some of the senior members of the first-team squad, are keen on seeing the midfielder stay at the club.
Todd Boehly has had an eventful 18 months at Chelsea but going against yet another manager would not be a wise move.
Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter found out what inevitably happens once the manager and owner disagree and fans will be hoping Pochettino doesn’t suffer the same fate.
Selling Gallagher, who has been given the captain’s armband during this campaign, would go against Pochettino’s wishes which may well be a death sentence for the Argentine.
