Danny Murphy thinks Eric Dier’s time at Tottenham Hotspur is coming to an end after being put on the sidelines by Ange Postecoglou.

This isn’t a case of bad blood between the player or manager, far from it, just the pure fact that the summer-appointed Tottenham boss doesn’t see Eric Dier in his future plans.

Ever since Ange Postecoglou entered the building at Hotspur Way, he has only played his senior centre-back for 198 minutes of Premier League football.

This is despite Micky van de Ven being injured and Cristian Romero going on his usual road to suspensions, and then suffering a recent injury.

Danny Murphy highlighted that Eric Dier’s ‘lack of pace’ and ‘physicality’ is a reason behind this all because he can’t play this new fearless brand of football at Tottenham, as he told talkSPORT.

When two fullbacks, in this case, Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, are playing ahead of you, then you know your time is up.

And with Eric Dier’s contract expiring in 2024, then it’s pretty obvious that it’s about when he will leave and where, not if.

Eric Dier to leave Tottenham

“I just think it’s one of those situations where you fall out of favour and lose a bit of confidence,” said Murphy.

“Physically, it’s not suiting him the way Tottenham are playing, at the moment, in terms of a high line and you need pace, so I don’t think he is part of the future.

“He has done well in years gone by at Tottenham. Probably on a good contract and they aren’t willing to renew him and pay the same money, so he is looking at alternative options. Sometimes it’s a balance between on-the-field and off-the-field stuff.

“But he is a decent player for someone because he can play centre-mid and he can play centre-back. I think there will be a few takers for Dier.”

Eric Dier to stay in the Premier League?

When the 29-year-old joined Spurs, he arrived from Sporting Lisbon and there are suggestions that such a possible move is on the cards.

If the player wished, he could now sign a pre-contract agreement with the Portuguese club.

Or if he wants to stay in the Premier League and see out his contract, then he will have to wait until the summer, with suggestions that West Ham United want to take him on board.
