Time is edging closer to Ivan Toney making a long-awaited return to Premier League action after his betting ban.
But will he be donning the colours of title-chasers Arsenal? Or relegation-threatened, Brentford?
Michael Dawson thinks clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, should have signed Ivan Toney back in the summer when his ban had just started, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (06/01/24 at 2:10 pm).
That way he felt you could have got the 29-year-old through the building, but now he thinks the price value of the £20k-a-week goalscorer has ‘gone up’ for teams like Arsenal.
You feel the team more in need of Ivan Toney’s goalscoring prowess is Mikel Arteta’s side.
It was a festive period to forget for the fourth-placed side, who at Christmas, were sitting on top of the Premier League tree.
All of that has resulted in even stronger calls for the Gunners to bring in another striker and Michael Dawson has made it clear that it needs to be Ivan Toney.
Ivan Toney’s future
“For me, I am a huge fan of Ivan Toney,” said Dawson. “For me, Arsenal have to go (and get him). I said it in the summer when Spurs were looking.
“Yes, he wasn’t able to play for a few months. Go there and sign him. It’s all well and good now. The price value has gone up. You could have had him there and in the building. You could have had him training the way you want to play.
“Would he hit the ground running? Time will only tell. But I am a huge fan, he knows where the back of the net is and, at this moment in time, Brentford wouldn’t want him to go.”
Brentford in a relegation battle?
What now makes things more problematic for Arsenal is Brentford’s current situation, where they are struggling all over the pitch.
Not only are they hovering four points above the drop zone, but they have lost five Premier League games in a row.
And, most recently, they were forced into an FA Cup replay against Wolves, despite the Midlands side being down to ten men from the ninth minute onwards.
Things aren’t looking well for Thomas Frank’s side and he needs Toney back in his XI to spark life into the team.
All of this just makes matters worse for Arsenal and their quest to find that goalscorer this month.
