Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on Genoa defender Radu Dragusin and the move has been backed by Romanian legend Mircea Lucescu.
Tottenham are looking to tie up two signings this week as they seek a fast start to the January transfer window.
HITC Football understands that Tottenham are very close to announcing the arrival of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
The former Chelsea misfit is poised to secure a loan return to London and Tottenham want to follow that up with a defensive signing.
Sources indicate that Tottenham are getting closer to signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin with right back Djed Spence heading the other way on loan.
Mircea Lucescu backs Radu Dragusin to Tottenham Hotspur
Bayern Munich have shown an interest in Dragusin but Tottenham remain confident of signing the Genoa star and avoiding a hijack.
The 21-year-old has excelled in Serie A this season and has attracted interest from Napoli too.
Add in links to Barcelona and Dragusin feels like something of a coup if Tottenham can get a deal over the line.
Dragusin’s potential move to Tottenham is making headlines in Romania with managerial legend Mircea Lucescu having his say.
Lucescu was a Dinamo Bucharest star and Romanian international as a player before going on to enjoy a 44-year managerial career.
The 78-year-old is an icon in Romania and has coached the likes of Romania, Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Lucescu has now told iAMsport in Romania that he thinks Dragusin should pick a move to England with Tottenham over staying in Italy or heading to Spain.
Lucescu feels that Dragusin’s physicality is ideal for English football and backed him to shine if he makes the move to Spurs.
“I met him a few times, during the time he was at Juventus, he has some high qualities… First of all, he is young, all big clubs want young footballers because they also think about an investment in time,” said Lucescu.
Right now, the English Championship gives you the exact measure of your worth. [He has] Physical qualities. The Italian league is much too tactical, the Spanish one is technical, it would be a disadvantage for Radu. With his qualities, the ideal is the Premier League.”
“Smoothly. Learn, he’s young. It’s hard to change a 30-something, he’ll handle it,” he added when asked how Dragusin would cope in a back four compared to a back three.
Dragusin will love having Lucescu’s backing and Tottenham fans will hope that his words carry some weight.
Until the deal is done, Tottenham fans will fear a hijack from elsewhere in Europe and getting this deal over the line in the coming days would be a statement of intent for Spurs.
