Tim Sherwood thinks Manchester United weren’t targeting Pedro Porro enough during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Even though Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham were 1-0 down inside three minutes, they did very well to equalise within 15 minutes from the man of the moment, Richarlison.

Tim Sherwood thinks it all stemmed from a ‘fantastic’ ball from Pedro Porro and his Spurs teammate did the rest, as he told Premier League Productions (14/01/24 at 5:25 pm).

From a defensive aspect, fans have heard Tim Sherwood’s comments before on the all-action Tottenham right-back.

And given that Pedro Porro likes to burst forward, then it does leave him vulnerable when he is trying to defend because there is acres of space to attack if you are the opposition and goalscorer Marcus Rashford got just that.

That’s an area of the game Tim Sherwood felt that the home side didn’t do enough and ‘get him defending where he is at his worst’.

Pedro Porro v Manchester United

“You need to get him defending when he is at his worst, if you are Manchester United,” said Sherwood.

“But the defending is awful (from Man United for Richarlison’s equaliser). I don’t know who they are marking. Some of them are zonal. Others are man-to-man. And what they have forgot is to go and head the ball.

“Let’s have it right, it’s a fantastic delivery and it’s a wonderful header. All Richarlison had to do was get a little touch and that’s what he does. No-one on the back post.”

Tottenham’s performance at Old Trafford

Given the number of players that have been absent for Spurs, then this was some performance from the London club.

Top-scorer Heung-min Son is away at the Asian Cup, the underrated Dejan Kulusevski is on the sidelines and the magic of James Maddison is edging closer to returning to action.

You would imagine that if those three were available, then Spurs could have, not only won at Old Trafford, but by scoring a lot more goals.

And the midfield hasn’t even been mentioned because Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are the AFCONs.
