Paul Merson didn’t pull any punches and made it clear that Jadon Sancho is ‘solely’ the one to blame for his failings at Manchester United.

After a public falling out with Erik ten Hag, it was pretty clear that the 23-year-old’s career at Old Trafford was all but over, unless he publicly apologised for criticising his manager on social media.

Despite having the chance to apologise, Jadon Sancho opted against it and, as a result, he left Manchester United to secure a loan move back to Borussia Dortmund on Friday.

HITC Sport have been told about the terms of the deal for a player who was signed for £73 million back in 2021.

Paul Merson thinks the England international has just thrown away the chance to perform for the ‘biggest club in the world’, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (13/01/24 at 2:20 pm).

The former double-winner at Arsenal couldn’t understand why he didn’t knock on Erik ten Hag’s door and sort it out because ‘the lad had it (all) at his feet’.

Ever since this saga erupted, it has divided opinion amongst many and will continue to do so as Jadon Sancho now begins his second stint as a Dortmund player.

Jadon Sancho mistake

On where the blame lies on the Sancho transfer not working at Man United: “The lad,” said Merson in a pretty blunt fashion.

“Of course, it is (solely on his door). He could have gone to the manager and said ‘I am sorry. What I said was a bit harsh’. Even if he didn’t mean it, just go in and say it.

“He will look back on this when his career is finished at 32, whatever age he is, and think I just signed for the biggest club in the world and I threw it all away.

“That’s the problem with football sometimes now. They get the money so quickly that it doesn’t really matter. The lad had it at his feet – he will look back on his career and think ‘what have I done?’ And he is to blame. He is to blame.”

Jadon Sancho assists on second Dortmund debut

Dortmund secured a comprehensive 3-0 win over Darmstadt on Saturday, with Sancho coming off the bench to make his second debut for the club.

The wide trickster made an instant impact because he assisted Marco Reus for his goal to send a message to all that he still has quality at his feet.

Some will throw verbal pelters at ten Hag for this and how he should have sorted this situation out and got Sancho back on the pitch again.

But others will look towards the loaned-out player and suggest that doing it in Germany doesn’t really tell them much because he has performed in the Bundesliga before and it’s in the Premier League where he just hasn’t delivered.
