Newcastle United and Manchester City played out yet another entertaining Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

There were some enormous battles throughout the game and on the pitch, including in the middle of the park between Rodri and Bruno Guimaraes.

Both players were booked during the game, with Rodri retaliating to a challenge he received from the Newcastle United man, which resulted in him going into the book.

Shaun Wright-Phillips thinks Bruno Guimaraes had the Treble-winning midfielder rattled because he ‘got under his skin’, as he told Premier League Productions (13/01/24 at 6:40 pm).

There were a few angry moments from the Treble-winning star and he made that clear on the pitch.

Yes, Eddie Howe watched his team suffer yet another defeat, but one thing he can’t argue about is the effort and aggression his players are showcasing.

And, in truth, if it wasn’t for one of the best Premier League players ever in Kevin de Bruyne, then Newcastle might have got something out of what was a pretty feisty game.

Bruno Guimaraes v Rodri

“I think they need to be careful, they are both on a yellow,” said Wright-Phillips. “He (Bruno) has enticed him and got under Rodri’s skin.”

Mini break for Newcastle

Not many teams, other than Newcastle, probably need this upcoming break more than others.

It has been a period to forget for the team, with the only bright spark, and it was a big one, was the win over Sunderland in the FA Cup.

From injuries, lack of options on the bench, conceding too many chances, and individual players making mistake after mistake.

When Newcastle return to action, it’s a trip to Villa Park against a team that has won 16 of their last 17 league games on home soil.

Yes, it’s a very, very difficult task, but if they can come away with three points, then you feel it will kick-start their season again.
