» » » ’Just exquisite’: Peter Schmeichel blown away by Manchester United midfielder v Tottenham

As you would expect, there were goals and entertainment galore as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur played out a highly-fought 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Inside three minutes, Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring with a stunning thunderbolt of a finish from inside the penalty area.

But it all came after what Peter Schmeichel described as an ‘exquisite’ pass from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, as he told Premier League Productions (14/01/24 at 5:25 pm).

Andre Onana played the ball out to Bruno Fernandes and he initially picked out Marcus Rashford, who raced through and tried cutting onto his favourable right foot, before the ball fell kindly to Rasmus Hojlund and he did the rest to the delight of the Manchester United crowd.

Unfortunately for Erik ten Hag’s side, they couldn’t stop the relentless machine that is Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Richarlison equalised soon after as the goals continued to flow in throughout the game.

Either way, Peter Schmeichel was keen to give Bruno Fernandes his flowers for starting off proceedings today.

Bruno Fernandes’s passing

“He (Hojlund) needed that as well,” said Schmeichel. “This is a great team goal.

“Straight away Onana started the counter-attack. This pass from Bruno is just exquisite. This is the only bit (from Rashford) where I am thinking ‘oh no, not again’. Trying to cut in and losing the ball.

“Hojlund, he is alive and picks the ball up. But just look at this pass (from Fernandes), it is just beautiful. There is space on all the time.”

Manchester United going into the break

This is needed for Man United because of their Champions League commitments this season, which didn’t go to plan and constant injuries.

Now, the plus side is that the ever-popular Lisandro Martinez is back from injury, as well as midfielder Casemiro.

You wouldn’t expect many players to come in during the January transfer window, but at least there is some time for reflection to be had on what has been a pretty poor start to the season.

The aim has to be to win the FA Cup and secure a Champions League finish for Manchester United, if ten Hag doesn’t, then you wonder how long he will remain in a job.
