» » » ‘An impact player’: Paul Merson says £47.5m forward not good enough to start for Tottenham

Paul Merson has given his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson.

The former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit does not think that Johnson is good enough to start for Tottenham.

So, what has Paul Merson said about Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson? Let’s take a look.

Paul Merson comments on Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson

Well, Tottenham Hotspur took on Everton away from home in the Premier League this past weekend.

The match at Goodison Park ended in a 2-2 draw. Richarlison scored both goals for Tottenham against his former club Everton.

Brennan Johnson started the match for Spurs. The 22-year-old winger was deployed on the right of a three-man attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Dejan Kulusevski was on the bench and replaced the £47.5 million (Sky Sports) Welshman on 64 minutes.

Former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was not impressed by Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou’s decision to play Johnson ahead of Kulusevski.

In the build-up to the game, Merson said that Postecoglou was wrong in his team selection, noting that Johnson is not good enough to start for Spurs at the moment.

Merson said on Sky Sports News (12:33 pm, February 4, 2024): “Kulusevski is not playing today. I don’t agree with that one.

“I wouldn’t have played Johnson. I know he scored, but I think Johnson is an impact player at the moment. I don’t think he is a player that starts for Tottenham.”

My View: Brennan Johnson a future Tottenham Hotspur star

In my opinion, Brennan Johnson is a star of the future for Tottenham Hotspur. I think that the former Nottingham Forest forward could establish himself as a big player in the team.

Johnson was a big success at Forest. The Wales international forward, who has pace, did well in the Championship for the Reds and then played brilliantly in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old scored 18 goals and gave 10 assists in 49 Championship appearances in 2021-22 and scored eight goals and provided three assists in 33 Premier League starts in 2022-23 for Forest.

So far this season, Johnson, who has impressed Destiny Udogie, has made 13 starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham. He has scored two goals and given four assists in those games.
