Andy Townsend has given his verdict on Paul Pogba, a player Manchester United released on a free transfer twice.

The former Chelsea midfielder rates Pogba highly and has suggested a reason why he was not at his best at United.

So, what has Andy Townsend said about Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba? Let’s take a look.

Andy Townsend praises former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba

Well, Andy Townsend has said that he rates Paul Pogba very highly. The former Chelsea player and talkSPORT pundit has suggested that the midfielder could have done better at Manchester United if he had better players around him.

Pogba was on the books of United from 2009 until 2012 when he left Old Trafford as a free agent and joined Juventus. The Red Devils brought him back to Old Trafford in 2016.

The 30-year-old midfielder left United as a free agent in the summer of 2022 and returned to Juventus.

Townsend said about Pogba on talkSPORT (4:24 pm, February 8, 2024): “I was (a fan), you know. I liked Pogba. I did, I did like Pogba. I thought he was an exceptional player. I think he is an exceptional talent.”

The pundit added: “He is a good player, though. He is a very, very talented player. If he had been playing with better players…”

My View: Paul Pogba was a disappointment at Manchester United

In my opinion, Paul Pogba was a disappointment at Manchester United. I do not think that the Old Trafford faithful saw the best of Pogba.

Yes, there were occasions when Pogba was very good at United. He was never a leader in the middle of the park, and when played to his strengths, he did well.

However, Pogba was never consistently great. I do not think that the Frenchman was able to affect matches like many United fans expected him to.

Perhaps Pogba needed someone like Andrea Pirlo to take the pressure off of him and allow him to play his natural game in the middle of the park for United, who want to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the summer of 2024.

It did not help that there were managerial changes at United as well. According to Sky Sports, Pogba scored 39 goals in 233 first-team appearances for the Red Devils.
