» » » ‘Going to get better and better’: Centre-back Tottenham have loaned out tipped to explode now

Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Foster has given his verdict on Ashley Phillips, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Foster has been very impressed by the performances produced by Phillips so far.

So, what has Ian Foster said about Tottenham Hotspur-owned Ashley Phillips? Let’s take a look.

Praise for Tottenham Hotspur-owned defender Ashley Phillips

Well, Plymouth Argyle manager Ian Foster has been speaking about Ashley Phillips, and he has been impressed by the Tottenham Hotspur-owned defender.

Phillips has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2023 when he joined from Blackburn Rovers.

Spurs decided to send the 18-year-old centre-back on loan to Plymouth in the Championship in the January transfer window. He has been very good.

The teenager has made six appearances in the Championship and has played twice in the FA Cup for Plymouth, and manager Foster is very pleased with him.

Speaking after the match against Leeds United this past weekend, Foster said, as quoted in PlymouthLive: “We are really pleased with Ashley. Moving him centrally gave us an opportunity to limit his distance. So when you play centrally in a back three you do less running than you do as the outside centre-back.

“It was a little bit tactical and a little bit physical with that decision. We have got the balance of Lewis playing on the left. I thought he (Phillips) performed really well. He’s just going to get better and better. It’s our job while he’s here to continue to develop him, make him a better player, give him the experiences he’s getting but his performances have been fabulous.”

Foster, who has also raved about Alfie Devine, added: “He’s capable of playing as a right or left-sided centre-back in a back four or anywhere across the back three. Ashley has struggled late in some games because he’s getting muscle soreness and cramps so the opportunity to move him centrally, we know he’s capable of.

“He understands the role, it’s slightly different than playing off the side but he’s a young player who is capable of taking on tactical information and then implementing it on the grass.”

My View: Ashley Phillips could be a star for Tottenham Hotspur

In my opinion, Ashley Phillips could be a star for Tottenham Hotspur in the coming years.

Yes, Phillips is only 18 now and is far from the finished article, but he is playing in the Championship instead of turning out for the Tottenham youth team.

It shows just how good and talented Phillips is. You are not going to find too many 18-year-old players who are playing in the Championship at the moment. It shows his hunger and determination to have a successful career.

The England Under-19 international is going to return to Tottenham as a better and more mature player, and I think that in the coming years, he could become a mainstay in the team.
