Stephen Warnock thinks Brennan Johnson has had a difficult start to life at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Wales international secured a big-money transfer to Tottenham Hotspur from Nottingham Forest in the summer, but he wasn’t the only big name that arrived.

With Spurs also adding the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven to their ranks, Stephen Warnock thinks it has resulted in Brennan Johnson going ‘under the radar’, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

At the weekend, the 22-year-old showcased his worth to Ange Postecoglou because he came off the bench and scored a valuable winning goal during Tottenham’s 2-1 late show against Brighton.

That was a much-needed moment, not just for Tottenham, but the player himself because Stephen Warnock thinks ‘he hasn’t performed’ as consistently as he would have liked.

When you are playing alongside the likes of Son Heung-min, and he is hitting elite numbers, then you are going to be judged by that level.

If Brennan Johnson wants to be successful, then he has to hit those numbers and performances and Stephen Warnock thinks it will happen given time.

Brennan Johnson’s start at Tottenham

“He is probably the player, from everyone that signed in the summer, especially when you look at the impact Maddison has had and van de Ven,” said Warnock.

“I think he is probably the one who has gone under the radar and hasn’t performed quite at the level expected. And when I say expected, it’s the price tag he has come in at.

“People are saying ‘if they are paying that much for him, then he should be scoring goals week in and week out’. He is young. I almost felt with the celebration as well, that was a release of ‘I have finally got my goal and I can contribute to the team’.

“There is more to come from him. He is a good player. Still learning. But If you go up against a defender, who is equally as quick as you, and you rely a lot on your game on pace, then you have to change the way you play. I think that’s something he has to get better at in the Premier League.”

Brennan Johnson is showing promise

The important thing here is that the £70k-a-week star is playing in an environment that is allowing him to flourish and play on the front foot.

He is involved in a lot of attacking movements and there are clear weaknesses in his game, which in time, will only improve.

That lack of cutting edge will get better for Johnson, but what also helps his cause are the players around him, such as Dejan Kulusevski.

If Johnson is having a poor game, then the limelight can be taken off him and put onto another teammate who can take that burden.
