In previous years, there has been a bit of a dark cloud over players who have donned the Arsenal captain’s armband.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of his role, and in the end, left the club after Mikel Arteta was no longer having his nonsense.

Whilst midfielder Granit Xhaka, who ended up becoming a firm fan favourite, once stormed off the pitch against Crystal Palace and also had his duties taken away from him.

There seemed to be a bit of a curse on the Arsenal captaincy, but not anymore because Martin Odegaard is showing how it should be done.

Stephen Warnock lauded the former Real Madrid man and how he leads with his performances on the pitch, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

The former left-back added that Martin Odegaard is the ‘go-to guy’ for Arsenal and if he performs, then the team is ‘unstoppable’.

That has proven to be the case in recent weeks because the Premier League title-chasing side have dispatched Burnley and West Ham United by scoring 11 goals.

Martin Odegaard’s role for Arsenal

“Some lead by being vocal, some lead by their displays and what they do on the pitch,” said Warnock.

“He is that type who sets the press off, who wants to be organised on the pitch. You can see him giving out instructions, but it’s done in a calm manner.

“He is the go-to guy. Perhaps he had a dip in form when they weren’t scoring. And I am being very, very picky on that.

“But an exceptional footballer. When he is at his very best, Arsenal are pretty much unstoppable because of the way he plays. So difficult to pick up and so difficult to stop, whether you put two players on him or man-mark him. He will find space and that area on the pitch that hurts you.”

Dealing with the pressure

Being a wonderkid with a massive spotlight on you, isn’t easy, especially when it doubles and triples in size when you join a team like Real Madrid.

That’s what Odegaard has had to deal with from the age of 15 and a lot of pressure about what he was going to become as a player.

It’s fair to say, after a few bumpy roads, he is now starting to showcase his worth and lead this Arsenal team in an outstanding fashion.

Just like the rest of his teammates, if he wins the Premier League title, then he can call himself world-class, continue to perform in the Champions League, and then he can enter that category.

Until then, the £30 million signing is just below the elite, it’s just a case of when he will get there, not if.
