» » » ’That was sensational’: John Barnes blown away by Arsenal duo after thumping win over Burnley

John Barnes lauded duo Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli following Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

After hitting West Ham United for six the week before, the Premier League title challengers were at it again, this time in the East Lancs, with their captain leading the way.

After a cut-back from the in-form Gabriel Martinelli, it was a stunning pin-point finish from Martin Odegaard on the edge of the area to help Arsenal open the scoring.

That pass from Arsenal’s speedster on the left was labelled ‘unbelievable’ by John Barnes, before he also lauded Martin Odegaard and said his finish was ‘sensational’, as he told Premier League Productions (17/02/24 at 3:50 pm).

A number of weeks ago, Arsenal’s playmaker, as he displayed during the 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa and in the FA Cup against Liverpool, would either fall over the ball, put it wide, hit the crossbar or hit it straight at the keeper.

But that finish was the Norway star at his very, very best and a big reason why he is one of the best in the Premier League in his position.

Martin Odegaard’s goal for Arsenal against Burnley

“The question of Arsenal is they don’t play well, but today they played well,” said Barnes. “They controlled the game.

“When you have the quality of Odegaard. His first goal was sensational. That was the difference. No matter how well you play, you need individual quality. This goal by Odegaard was sensational, in terms of execution.

“The ball comes out to Martinelli, this is an unbelievable pass. I don’t know if he meant to find Odegaard, but to find Odegaard there and the technique. How many people have you seen half volley it and it goes over the bar or wide?

“In modern football now, when you go down the line, you don’t just put the ball into the box. You actually cut it back onto the edge of the box.”

Arsenal in their best mood yet

Over the winter period, Mikel Arteta watched his Arsenal side go through their worst period of the season and it was proving to be costly.

Fans were fearing the worst, pundits were writing them off and saying that they weren’t going to win the Premier League title.

But fast forward to the present and only two points separate Arsenal and leaders Liverpool.

What could also prove to be even more important is the goal difference. It’s plus 36 for the Gunners, better than Liverpool by one and better than Manchester City by five, who have a game in hand.

This is certainly going into the final few weeks of the season, that’s for sure.
