» » » ‘His cultured style is misleading’: Pat Nevin says Arsenal have a player who ‘has superb technique’

One of the Arsenal players who has emerged as a key figure in manager Mikel Arteta’s side in recent weeks is Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz struggled in the opening months of the season for Arsenal after joining from London and Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

The Germany international, though, is now one of the first names on the Arsenal teamsheet. He is scoring important goals and is also creating chances for his teammates. Micah Richards has noted that Havertz looks happy now.

Havertz is playing well as a false nine, and there have been questions raised on whether Gabriel Jesus needs to start now.

Arsenal beat Brentford this past weekend. Havertz scored the winning goal. It was his eighth goal in the Premier League this season. The 24-year-old has also given three goals in those games.

Former Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin has been hugely impressed by Havertz and has outlined the attributes that make him a special player.

Pat Nevin praises Arsenal star Kai Havertz

Nevin wrote about Havertz in his BBC Football Extra newsletter (6:01 pm, March 11, 2024): “Kai Havertz will split opinions this week with his antics, so no change there then. I have always been a big fan of the German, even during his tough times at Chelsea.

“He has superb technique, can be as graceful as any player around and has a happy knack of scoring ultra-important goals. The winner against Brentford in the dying seconds could be his most important for Arsenal yet, but remember this is a guy who has scored the winner in the Champions League Final and the World Club Championship.”

The pundit added: “Against Brentford, Havertz scored his winner after being moved slightly further back to allow Jesus to play higher, it was perfect for the German and his ghosting late runs. Arsenal fans are learning to love him, the way others haven’t. He doesn’t always look as though he is working his socks off, but his cultured style is misleading.

“He will also play anywhere you ask him, without complaint, an attitude not always present with every star player. This is another reason why Arteta stands by him. He certainly seems to be paying off the initial hefty £65 million fee Arsenal laid out on him.

“Kai doesn’t always endear himself to opposition fans and his blatant dive against Brentford, which should have resulted in a sending off, will understandably anger many, as it did me. There was no excuse for that, but right at this minute I suspect the Arsenal fans couldn’t care less.”

My View: Arsenal need Kai Havertz to be at his best

In my opinion, Arsenal need Kai Havertz to stay on top of his game for the rest of the season.

Arsenal are competing with Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners need all of their attacking players to chip in with goals, just as they have been doing in recent seasons.

After all, for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah bangs in the goals for fun. City have Erling Haaland.

Arsenal do not have a prolific goalscorer. So, the North London club need to have players such as Havertz to continue to score goals.
