Define Tottenham Hotspur – just look at how the team performed at Villa Park and then at Craven Cottage.

Son Heung-min rightfully had the biggest smile on his face when his Tottenham side beat top-four rivals Aston Villa 4-0.

It was the best performance under Ange Postecoglou’s reign so far and a positive sign that they were going to grab that all-important fourth spot.

But fast forward to the weekend, and not only did Tottenham lose 3-0 to Fulham, but it was a deserved loss.

Son Heung-min was pretty forthright in what he had to say after the game and how ‘everybody needs to look in the mirror’ because it ‘wasn’t good enough’, as he told Sky Sports.

Stephen Warnock has claimed that those comments from the Tottenham captain will ‘hurt’ those inside the dressing room, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

That has dented the club’s top-four hopes because they could have been level with fourth-placed Aston Villa on points, a better goal difference and with a game in hand.

That’s probably why that Fulham defeat won’t just hurt, but annoy everyone associated with the club, including the manager.

Tottenham’s defeat to Fulham

“The progress they have made this year is incredible,” said Warnock.

“To be in the hunt for a Champions League place. They are bringing good football back to Spurs and they are enjoying going back to the match the Spurs fans because they are seeing a style of football that they enjoy. Their next part is being consistent.

“Even Son’s comments, that will hurt. It does hurt you individually and collectively. They will be looking to bounce back straight away.”

Reaction against Luton Town

This is going to be a very tricky game for Spurs and an early goal is going to be needed.

Luton are fighting for their lives. They will sit back and try to frustrate Spurs, so if they can keep it quiet for an hour, then it will favour the away team.

If Postecoglou’s side can return from the international break by securing three points, then it will give them the boost and confidence they need to hunt down Villa, with a midweek trip to West Ham United around the corner.

There is no doubt more points will be dropped from both teams and this top-four race will go to the final weeks of the season.
