Andy Gray was critical of Joe Gomez during Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final showdown against Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Ever since the 26-year-old suffered a long-term injury in 2020, his performances, form and game time have gone backwards.
But it’s fair to say that this season, Joe Gomez has been quite outstanding in Liverpool colours and deserves his recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Despite all of that, Andy Gray feels Joe Gomez was targeted by Manchester United in a pulsating FA Cup clash against two of English football’s biggest teams, as he told beIN SPORTS (17/03/24 at 4:25 pm).
The former striker suggested that the versatile player was ‘exposed’, with Liverpool falling 1-0 behind after ten minutes, going into the break 2-1 ahead, before Antony forced the game into extra-time and then Amad Diallo dramatically scored a stunning winner in stoppage-time of extra time.
It was quite an incredible finish to the game because this was like two heavyweight boxers just going after each other with blow after blow right until the end.
After 101 minutes, Jurgen Klopp subbed off Joe Gomez for Kostas Tsimikas, with the Englishman on a yellow card.

“Whether they did this deliberately, but they identified Joe Gomez, who has been exposed today,” said Gray.

If Gomez had continued to struggle this season, then you just know some fans would have spoken about the club having to part ways with him.
But these performances from the Charlton academy product, and mainly at left-back, have been of the highest quality.
Not only is Gomez returning to the England squad, but he probably deserves to start, and that as a left-sided fullback!
You never would have guessed it at the start of the season, but he has been the best-performing English left-back.
