» » » ‘In the right context’: Andy Townsend simply isn’t having what he’s hearing about Tottenham's Son

Son Heung-min hasn’t just been one of the best players for Tottenham Hotspur for the past decade.

But he has only been a top performer on the Premier League stage, whether it’s under Mauricio Pochettino or now Ange Postecoglou.

You just feel the lack of trophies isn’t probably putting the glow or recognition on his play or game as it already should.

The 31-year-old joined Tottenham in 2015 when Pochettino was in charge, and despite early struggles, he has blossomed into a top performer.

That’s proven by his goals record, Son Heung-min has an impressive 118 goals on the Premier League stage.

And you feel with plenty more years left in the tank for the player, he will only continue to hit bigger heights.

Andy Townsend was in no doubt that Son is a ‘top player’ and a ‘great operator for Spurs’, as he told talkSPORT.

But when it was suggested that he is a possible ‘Premier League legend’, the former Chelsea and Aston Villa man wasn’t having any of it.

Son Heung-min in the Premier League

“He [Son] is a top player, he’s a great; that word ‘legend’ should only be used in the right context,” said Townsend.

He then joked: “Someone put that on your script about me earlier and it’s not right.”

“I think that Son has been a great player and great operator for Spurs, but a legend? No.”

Son Heung-min’s contract

The South Korean star is the most popular player at Spurs. If fans thought Harry Kane’s exit hurt, well, when he leaves, it will probably be even worse.

One of the best players to don Spurs colours, Son’s current deal expires in 2025.

You feel something has got to give here and he needs to sign a new contract in these next 12 months.

There is nothing that suggests it won’t happen. He is still loving life at the club and performing at the top of his game.
