Chelsea have stunned the footballing world having announced the departure of manager Mauricio Pochettino just 48 hours after the end of the Premier League season.

The Blues have endured a testing season but everything seemed to be coming together.

Chelsea ended the season with five straight wins and beat Bournemouth on the final day of the season to finish sixth.

A sixth-place finish and European football seemed like a distant dream for much of the season but Mauricio Pochettino had put together a decent run.

One defeat in the final 15 games of the season saw Chelsea secure Europa League football for next season.

Chelsea were finally coming together but they have now made a stunning announcement.

Mauricio Pochettino leaves Chelsea

There has been lingering uncertainty over Pochettino’s future despite that upturn in form.

HITC reported earlier in May that Pochettino wanted to stay at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea had an interest in other managers.

Sporting’s Ruben Amorim is just one name on the Chelsea radar and the Blues are now officially looking for a new boss.

Chelsea have confirmed that Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent after less than a year at the club.

The Argentinian had a testing time at Chelsea but having found some real form to end the season, his departure has come as a surprise.

Paul Merson on Pochettino

Fans and pundits have been left stunned and Paul Merson is no different.

The former Arsenal favourite is actually a Chelsea fan and he has given his first reaction to Pochettino’s exit.

Merson has taken to social media to state that he simply ‘cannot believe’ Pochettino has gone, questioning whoever at Chelsea allowed him to go.

Merson feels that Chelsea will really struggle to find a manager who can replace Pochettino, especially after he just got Chelsea into a good run of form.

The Sky Sports pundit praised Pochettino for getting Chelsea in to Europe and branded the decision for him to leave as ‘madness’, simply unable to believe what he is hearing.

“I’m just hearing the news about Pochettino,” said Merson. “Cannot believe he’s gone, cannot believe it. Whoever is making this decision… how are you going to replace a manager like him? He’d just got the team going, went on a great run, got into Europe, got sixth in the league from where they were and he’s just got this team playing, it’s madness. I cannot, cannot, cannot believe what I’m hearing,” he added.

This is another bold move from Todd Boehly and co as Chelsea struggle to settle on a manager.

Thomas Tuchel was axed 18 months after winning the Champions League and Graham Potter lasted just over six months in the job.

Frank Lampard saw Chelsea through to the summer of 2023 and Pochettino was supposed to be the long-term answer.

Instead, Pochettino is now on his way too and Chelsea are once again left to look for a new manager.
