Euro 2024 is throwing up some brilliant games and a fair few Arsenal players are playing their part.

In total 11 Arsenal players are competing at this summer’s European championships in Germany and they all have had mixed results.

In William Saliba’s case, he has helped France keep two clean sheets, whilst it’s another injury for Scotland star, Kieran Tierney.

You then have someone like Arsenal‘s number one goalkeeper David Raya, who after being part of the best defence in the Premier League, is a bench player for Spain, just like England’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Kai Havertz is still scoring goals, as Germany have made a 100% start as hosts and Declan Rice has received mixed responses for his performances in England colours.

But none of them got Ally McCoist more wound up than Leandro Trossard after the versatile Arsenal star’s cameo appearance from the bench for Belgium on Saturday.

After losing their opening Euro 2024 game, the Belgians secured their first victory by beating Romania 2-0, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans and Kevin de Bruyne.

But it could have been much more if Trossard, who came on as a sub, had made better decisions in the final third.

In as many minutes, the Arsenal winger decided to take a few extra touches rather than playing a ball early to his teammates to score.

This infuriated McCoist in the commentary box, to the point that Clive Tyldesley asked him ‘Are you going to go down to the dressing room after the game?’, as he told ITV Sport

Luckily for Trossard, the game was already won by then and Romania, who beat Ukraine in their opening match, were looking deflated.

Leandro Trossard criticised as Belgium beat Romania at Euro 2024

“He has got it give it to de Bruyne earlier,” said McCoist. “He takes an extra touch and it kills the run for de Bruyne. He makes a brilliant run from the middle of the park and the extra touch that Trossard takes. If is the other way around, you can guarantee that de Bruyne plays it earlier.

One minute later, McCoist added: “He has done it again. He has done it again, he has to play it the first time. Why does he take a touch? Just roll it right across the face. That’s twice.”

Clive Tyldesley stated “Carrasco is furious,” and then he added: “Are you going to go down to the dressing room after the game? To which McCoist responded: “I am actually frustrated myself. Twice. Just roll it across the face. Don’t bother taking a touch. It ends up being good defending when he shouldn’t have been allowed to.”

Leandro Trossard benched by Belgium

You could argue that the recently concluded campaign was Trossard’s best at club level after he scored 12 goals for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal had to watch the all-dominant Manchester City win the title on the last day, but there were still big improvements from when they bottled it the season before.

Gabriel Martinelli was seen as the starter for Arsenal, but it could be argued that Trossard is the main guy now after several strong performances from the bench.

Trossard has been benched by Belgium after that Slovakia defeat and he will need to find those same Arsenal-like performances if he is to earn his place back.
