Former Everton defender Ashley Williams is not surprised by reports linking Liverpool with a promising player who has excelled at Euro 2024.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool are in for a busy summer transfer window with HITC reporting that the club are keen on signing a new centre-back this summer.
LOSC Lille defender Leny Yoro is understood to be high up on the list of targets for the Reds but despite Liverpool working hard on a deal for the French teenager, the 18-year-old’s preference is Real Madrid.
Another option for the Reds is understood to be Feyenoord defender David Hancko, who HITC reported in January that Liverpool were interested in.
However, it is also our understanding that Atletico Madrid currently lead the race for the 26-year-old defender.
Ashley Williams responds to Liverpool’s interest in Hancko
Despite Liverpool’s interest in Hancko, the Reds never advanced the deal for the Slovakian defender but with Slot as the new manager at Anfield, perhaps the club may revisit a move.
Hancko, who has excelled for Feyenoord since moving to Sparta Prague back in 2022 for a fee of just £5 million, has been performing well so far at Euro 2024.
Speaking to the BBC, former Everton and Swansea City defender Ashley Williams was asked about the Reds’ interest in the Slovakian international.
“And seeing him the other day against Belgium, I am not surprised, to be honest,” Williams said. “I was really impressed with him. Athletic, fast. What I like about him is that he is confident and he backs himself in these one-v-ones.”
Hancko’s agent comments on Liverpool interest
According to the Slovakian’s agent, back in January, the Reds aren’t the only side who are interested in the 26-year-old defender.
“As an agency, we are in contact not only with these two clubs (Liverpool and PSG), but also with others who are looking into David’s situation,” Branislav Jasurek, who works for the FairSports Agency, told Slovakian outlet TN.
As for Liverpool’s other centre-back options, HITC understands that the club are keen on tying Virgil Van Dijk down to a new contract at the club.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are understood to have an interest in the defender but the Reds do not want to lose the 32-year-old this summer.
