» » » ‘Outstanding season’: Player Liverpool sold in 2019 backed to join Chelsea over Tottenham

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are looking for goals ahead of the summer transfer window re-opening.

On one side of London, Tottenham will be preparing for a second season under Ange Postecoglou after he guided them to fifth in his debut campaign.

They finished one place above Chelsea, who were also without European football during the recently concluded campaign, but then decided to part ways with their manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Regardless of what frame of mind Tottenham and Chelsea are in. The one constant theme is that they need goals.

Aston Villa, for instance, have 19-goal Premier League striker Ollie Watkins. Liverpool have Mohamed Salah, who netted 18 goals, despite some thinking he had a poor campaign.

But those in London are looking for that regular hitman and they could look towards another player who netted 19 times – Dominic Solanke.

The Bournemouth star came through Chelsea’s academy, and joined Liverpool for nothing, but was then sold in 2019 after really struggling.

It has taken him a while, but the 26-year-old is now playing his best football, with Tony Cascarino stating that he had an ‘outstanding’ campaign.

And if he had to pick a summer destination for the player, then he thinks that Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea is the place to be, rather than at Hotspur Way, as he told talkSPORT (08/06/24 at 7:45 am).

Dominic Solanke at Chelsea or Tottenham

“I would probably, I am showing my bias here, probably slightly Chelsea,” said Cascarino about Solanke moving to Stamford Bridge or north London.

“I am not sure a club will pay £65 million for Dominic Solanke. He had a terrific season. You have had an outstanding season. There’s a much bigger picture there. If you look over his career in total, then Dominic has improved, he got goals in the Championship, he didn’t really in his younger days he didn’t really make it at Liverpool, they let him go, they didn’t think he was good enough.

“I still think it’s a lot of money for someone that if he had gone in and had two, three seasons scoring at huge amounts, like Ollie Watkins has got goals regularly year by year, increase regularly. I don’t know if we just saw a standout season by Solanke there. Not saying he is not a really good player because he has improved a hell of a lot and fair play to him for that. Would I want to pay £65 million? I am not sure Spurs or Chelsea would want to go that deep.”

Dominic Solanke should stay at Bournemouth

This is the first time, in England’s top flight, that Solanke has proven that he really belongs and he should now aim for consistency.

If Solanke can match or better his best-scoring tally next season, then it will really elevate his status and that big move will be around the corner.

Plus, an England call wouldn’t be too far away after he missed out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

You feel the best years of Solanke’s career are yet to come and there have been many players who have played their best football during the second half of their playing days. There is no reason why Solanke can’t be that guy.
