Erik ten Hag will stay at Manchester United and it will now allow the club to focus on transfer matters.

There were a lot of injuries at Old Trafford during the recently concluded campaign, including at the heart of the defence.

That still wasn’t a viable excuse for Manchester United, on many occasions, to be conceding 15+ shots at their goal.

Come next season, fans will be hoping that Lisandro Martinez remains fit because he is pivotal to how they operate from the back.

But with Raphael Varane leaving, could Martinez have a new centre-back partner for the 2024/25 campaign because Manchester United need to invest in that department?!

Jonny Evans could yet stay, whilst Victor Lindelof is still on the club’s books and Harry Maguire actually performed well this term.

But Tony Cascarino thinks Jarrad Branthwaite could be Old Trafford-bound after being snubbed by England ahead of Euro 2024.

The former striker highlighted that the Everton defender is ‘quicker’ than Maguire and that would prove to be a huge asset for ten Hag next season, as he told talkSPORT.

Branthwaite might not have been selected by England, but he was still one of the best-performing English defenders and someone who had a ‘standout’ campaign.

“Huge stature again, he’s physical,” said Cascarino. “He had a standout season. He really did at Everton. I thought his partnership with Tarkowski, at times, was really, really good. I think he grew over the season as a player and his performances.

“The low for him was being let go by England. The high is that he could have a move to Manchester United. They obviously think a hell of a lot about him.

On the end for Maguire: “If you said, to me, between the two. Both are 6ft 4in players. He is quick. He is a lot quicker. I think that’s a standout feature. If you look alongside Martinez. If he is fit, then he is one hell of a player for Manchester United and if he is up alongside a lad that’s really good aerially. Dominant in the air, as well, Branthwaite, and he is good at set-pieces. Attacking and defending. Man United need a bit more extra pace at the heart of their defence because Varane used to be lightning. I think they need to inject some pace into the heart of their defence, anyway.”

Erik ten Hag next season

From the get-go, there is going to be a lot of pressure on ten Hag and his team’s FA Cup final win is going to be quickly forgotten about.

You just don’t know how big of a part that played in INEOS deciding to keep ten Hag at the club because he can’t afford any slip-ups now.

On one hand, it’s great to see a club actually remaining patient with a manager even if many are calling for him to be gone.

But Manchester United now need to start getting recruitment right because it could be defining for ten Hag wanting to turn his own fortunes around in the Premier League.
