Anthony Gordon has had an incredible rise during these past 12 months for Newcastle United.
When the former Everton man first moved to St James’ Park, he took time to settle in, but he is now looking like an incredible signing and one of Eddie Howe’s most important players.
England are blessed to have so much attacking talent to pick from and to be selected for Euro 2024 is a big thing for the Newcastle United star.
Even more so, Gareth Southgate decided to leave Marcus Rashford at home and it further proves how much he believes in Anthony Gordon.
But does the all-action winger start for his country when they begin their Euro 2024 campaign on Sunday against Serbia?
Alan Shearer, albeit he might be a little biased, says he would start him on the left flank and believes Southgate will play Phil Foden, Champions League winner Jude Bellingham and Arsenal’s Declan Rice in the middle of the park.
That call surprised Gary Lineker, but he still agreed with the Newcastle legend and stated how Gordon is ‘very good’, as he told Match of the Day Top 10.
Micah Richards also highlighted the defensive side of Gordon’s game, which is even more so important, especially in tournament football.
Anthony Gordon to start for England v Serbia at Euro 2024
“I think he will go differently with this one,” said Shearer. “I think he will go for Rice, Foden and Bellingham, then Saka, Kane and I would go with, as we are speaking at the moment, with Anthony Gordon, with the season he has had.”
Lineker responded by saying: “Wow. That’s a big shout, Alan. He is very good on the left and he can press.”
Richards added: “It’s a great shout. He does his defensive work. He makes great runs in behind. The reason why he wanted to play Rashford was because he runs in behind. Gordon does that. He is good on the ball. And he does his defensive work. It’s not a bad shout.”
Anthony Gordon’s importance to England
Even if the 23-year-old doesn’t start, he is going to play a very important role for England. More important than people think.
You could argue that Gordon is the quickest attacking player Southgate can pick from.

That is going to be huge, especially if he is brought on from the bench and there is space in behind for him to attack. That’s if England are leading.
And then, during the knockout stages, when the bigger and better teams attack England, that’s when Gordon will come into his own.
