Harry Redknapp has given his verdict on James Maddison after the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Gareth Southgate has made his final decision for the upcoming European Championship in Germany with Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison set to miss out.

After a superb start to life at Tottenham, the second half of the season for the attacking midfielder was more of a struggle for him with injury problems and inconsistent performances meant that he struggled.

As a result of this, Southgate has made the decision to cut the midfielder from his final 26-man squad for the tournament and former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp believes that this may be the right decision.

Redknapp on Maddison

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Portsmouth and QPR manager was asked about Maddison and whether it was the right decision to cut the midfielder from the team.

“Again, I am a big Maddison fan,” Redknapp said. “He’s my type of player, but, you know, he has had injury. When he started the season, great form, he looked like the buy of the year for Tottenham, and I thought he was.

“I thought what a signing he has been, and then he got the injury for a few months. He came back and his form dipped. He wasn’t the same player. It takes time to get over them injuries, and so, yeah, it didn’t surprise me he didn’t make it.”

In 28 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites, Maddison scored four goals and provided nine assists for the North London side.

Southgate made the right decision

With the sheer number of midfielders that have the quality to change a game in the squad, Maddison missing out is hardly surprising.

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden will be certain starters in Germany with Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo filling in the deeper roles. Eberechi Eze could well be a backup.

The reality is for Maddison is that there is no place for the Spurs midfielder in Southgate’s squad this summer.
